Description

In the spring of 1989, millions in Beijing marched for democracy and an end to corruption in China. That movement spread to the many campuses in Changchun, China, where Jay Lieberman was an English teacher at a technical university. This journal documents the four weeks from the start of the Democracy Movement on Jay’s campus to his family’s exit from China after the crackdown on the movement began on June 4th. The journal describes the students demands, hopes, and fears and the risks of standing up to the Chinese Communist Party and the central government in Beijing.

To be very honest, I knew very little about the Democracy Movement when I started reading this book. Reading it inspired me to learn more about it. It was very interesting to hear a first hand account of the educational conditions of the time, and the motivations for the students to push for change. I was also reminded of the vital importance of a free and unhindered media. By controlling the media, the Chinese government was able to sweep this protest under the rug and call it an unpatriotic uprising.
